The 17th century philosopher Baruch Spinoza uses the Latin term "Natura Naturans" to describe the way the world functions. A direct translation of this would be "nature naturing", which is Spinoza's way of saying that nature is not a passive thing, but rather an active, living, and arguably conscious process. To be more specific, Spinoza's idea of nature is one that can be violent, obtrusive, vibrant, and ever-present.
The poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge referred to this idea as "nature in the active sense".
