Anemones
Anemones is a surrealist short story written in eight parts. It is the first short story which I have polished, edited, rewritten, and crafted. This story was heavily inspired by my own psychedelic adventures and the headspaces which come with that.
Anemones is not exactly about me, but I understand that all fiction is autobiographical in some sense. I do not consider any of the characters to be representitive of me, but I do consider the world they inhabit to be an extension of how I view my own world.

What is Anemones about?
Anemones is about the frustration that arises from a seemingly unreadable world. It is about the discomfort and disrespect that the world shows to its inhabitants. Anemones is also about symbiosis. It is about a battle between human’s desire to care, and nature’s sheer indifference to the human experience.
Surrealist fiction
Anemones belongs to the genre of “surrealist fiction”. This is because I consider it to be set in a reality which is reflective of ours, but slightly askewed and exagurated. I used Anemeones as a playground for exploring my own interpretations of the world, whilst being free from the more concrete constraints of reality.
Inspiration
The Famished Road
Ben Okri’s rich story was one of the first fiction pieces which I truely fell in love with. The depictions of characters and themes within this text are so colourful and expansive that I find it impossible to ignore when writing my own work.
American Psycho
My love for Bret Easton Ellis’ book stems from the style it is written in, rather than its contents exactly. It has a way of seemlessly switching between minimalist and maximalist which kept me continuously hooked. That said, I do not support the writer.
Anybody who as read these two books knows that they share very few similarities. One book is deeply enshrined within African culture and mythos, whilst the other is enshrined within 80s American capitalist extremes.
And yet I love both of these books equally, and I would be lying if I said they didn’t both heavily inspire Anemones. It’s hard to explain how exactly they do this, but I know they are both undeniably significant milestones in my career as a fiction writer.
Additionally, neither of these books are surrealist in nature, however I believe a melding of their styles is where the surrealism enters (at least in part).
Clownfish
(coming out “eventually”)
A supplementary text to Anemones is soon to begin production, by the name of Clownfish. This text will delve into the world in which Anemones is set, exploring the characters, themes, writing style, inspirations, and the overall headspace that the story was written in.
